The Annual Institute on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management is the premiere event for education abroad professionals focused on risk management issues.

For 14 years, The Forum’s Health and Safety Institute has provided attendees with tools to strengthen institutional and organizational strategies for risk mitigation, incident prevention, emergency response, and overall wellbeing for education abroad participants.

Focused on the theme “Rebuilding the Field for Resilience,” the 2023 Health and Safety Institute features concurrent and plenary sessions on topics including:

  • Best practices for supporting the health, safety, and security of underserved and underrepresented populations in education abroad

Goals of the Institute

  • Enhance the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad by analyzing requirements and sharing examples of best practices;
  • Explore approaches from within as well as outside the field of education abroad; and
  • Enhance the overall safety and security of education abroad for the benefit of all participants.

Topics of interest to This Year’s Institute

At this year’s Health and Safety Institute, we’ll explore the theme “Rebuilding the Field for Resilience” through the following topics:

  • The changing landscape of students’ experiences abroad
    • This topic includes research, internships, service learning, short-term travel, travel to more non-traditional locations, and meeting the personalization and customization needs of current students.
  • Promoting emotional wellbeing for faculty, staff, and students
  • Supporting participants through robust pre-departure preparation
  • Best practices for supporting the health, safety, and security of underserved and underrepresented populations in education abroad
  • Preparing faculty to lead education abroad programs
    • This topic includes defining roles, responsibilities, and good practices in faculty-led programs.
  • Accomplishing more with less and managing competing priorities in under-resourced offices
    • This topic includes: scaling for reduced staffing/resources, changing definition of risk management profession, one person offices vs teams of support.
  • Climate change and its impact on risk assessment and mitigation in education abroad
  • Grappling with impossible questions (for example: nuclear fallout, cybersecurity, etc.) and setting expectations with stakeholders
  • The field of international risk management and global health, safety, and security
    • This topic includes seeking a full-time health and safety role, advocating for a position at your institution, collaborating with other practitioners, and thinking strategically amidst the ever-evolving state of higher education.
