Open Forum I: Conversational Learning – Engaging theory and practice to mediate burnout and foster whole person learning

Conversation is a ubiquitous dimension of human experience; it is also fundamental to learning and well-being. As international educators work resume programs, we continue to examine our capacities and practices, which can facilitate whole person learning and engagement among students and educators with diverse lived experiences. How is a focus on the work of conversation integral to our growth, resilience and effectiveness as advisors, collaborators, educators, and mentors? How does an intentional focus on conversation, particularly “learning conversations,” offer practitioners tools to respond to the complexity of global education contexts, resource constraints and learner needs?


Mjriam Abu Samra
Mjriam received her Ph.D. from the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford, UK and her MA in Middle East Politics from SOAS, UK. For the past 7 years, she has been leading the Community-based Learning course at AMIDEAST in Amman, Jordan where she also teaches courses such as History of Colonialism and Arab international relations. Mjriam teaches courses at CIEE in Amman and has been Gender Expert researcher at the Center of Strategic Studies – University of Jordan, where she also taught courses on Refugee Studies.


Quinton Redcliffe
Most of Quinton’s career has been spent within International Education. He has had the joy of learning with and from many students and staff during his 22-year period with CIEE. His Academic and Professional background is in Conflict and Conflict Management. He teaches and facilitates positive Intercultural Exchanges and Engagements for at all CIEE and beyond. He facilitates and creates Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging training opportunities for staff, students, and faculty. He does this to ensure that CIEE is a place where all people feel Included and have a sense of Belonging. Quinton is a member of The Forum On Education Abroad’s Inclusive International Working Group. Quinton holds a Masters Degree in Conflict and Conflict Management from Nelson Mandela University.


Cesar Alegre
Cesar holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, an MA in Spanish from Auburn university, and a B.S: in Electrical Engineering also from Auburn University. During the last 14 years he has been at IES Abroad where he and several colleagues developed a course and methodology conducive to creating a learning community in which professors and students share the thrust and explorations conducted in the classroom. This model is all based on a problem solving quest as identified by the learning community itself. Cesar has conducted research in multilingual acquisition of language and its semantic mapping.
